ABOUT SPACE APP CAMP
Hang on a minute - isn't the European Space Agency a bunch of astronauts and rocket scientists? What does ESA have to do with app development?
From space, our planet's atmosphere, land, and water can be monitored for multiple application fields. This is where the Space App Camp comes in: It's your chance to make the resulting information accessible to a broad audience and create value in the process!
For the fourth time, ESA is inviting 20 developers to its ESRIN location in Frascati (including travel expenses and accommodation).
The Space App Camp is a unique opportunity for app developers to meet with like-minded people, create mobile applications using satellite data, and gain insight into ESA's work.
The goal of the App Camp is to produce mobile apps using Earth observation data on smartphones. In doing so, it focuses on leveraging the possibilities offered by the European Earth observation programme Copernicus
, which recently became operational with the launch of the first Sentinel satellite
in April 2014 and the launch of Sentinel 2-A
in June 2015.
ESA will provide access to satellite data for the development of mobile applications (Android and iOS) in five predefined categories. A dedicated API
will enable easy integration of Earth observation data into your app. To take part in the App Camp, you don't need any experience in integrating such data.
Participants were able to choose their preferred category and could apply either alone or in teams of two, three, or four. All selected candidates will be grouped into teams of four.
The Space App Camp is organised by Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen
(AZO) on behalf of the European Space Agency

After a week of intense teamwork in your selected category, you and your team will present your app to the other participants and a jury nominated by ESA on the final day of the App Camp. The jury will then select the winning team and reward it with a cash prize worth EUR 2,500.
Participants with citizenship in the following countries: ESA member-states, states involved in the Copernicus Space Component (CSC), and countries participating in the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Community were welcome to join, but as always there are some rules to be accepted.
